Tokyo 2020 August 3rd – Preview

POSTED:

Three Irish athletes are set to make their Tokyo 2020 debuts as action gets underway at the Olympic Stadium on Tuesday morning.

Andrew Coscoran (Star of the Sea AC) makes his first appearance at an Olympic Games as he takes his place in the heats of the 1500m at 01.27am Irish time.

Coscoran comes into the Games in the form of his life, having posted a personal best time of 3:35.66 in June which ranks him 9th on the Irish all-time list – just one place behind Eamonn Coghlan.

Coscoran faces a tough challenge with 4 of the top 10 ranked athletes in the world lining up in his heat. The first 6 in each heat (Q) and the next 6 fastest (q) advance to the Semi-finals.

Bandon’s Phil Healy is back for her 4th appearance at these Games in the heats of the 400m, having already competed as part of the mixed 4 x 400m relay team, and in the heats of the 200m yesterday.

Healy was just pipped for a 400m medal at this year’s European Indoors and she’ll be looking to go close to her PB of 51.50 having recovered from her exploits over previous days.

Healy, who is currently placed 3rd on the Irish all-time list behind Joanne Cuddihy and Karen Shinkins goes in heat 5 at 2.17am Irish time.

The first 3 in each heat (Q) and the next 6 fastest (q) advance to the Semi-finals.

Marcus Lawler (Clonliffe Harriers AC) makes his Olympic debut in the heat 6 of the 200m at 3.45am.

The 2019 World University Games bronze medallist is the third fastest Irish man in history over both 100m and 200m and will likely need to better his seasons best of 20.93 to progress through these tricky heats.

The first 3 in each heat (Q) and the next 3 fastest (q) advance to the Semi-finals.

Leon Reid (Menapians AC) is also taking to the starting blocks for the 200m heats, with the Menapians athlete scheduled for heat 7 at 3.53am.

Reid will be looking to carry the form from his recent national 200m title to the start line as he bids to make it through to the semi-finals scheduled for later in the afternoon.
