Mark English (Letterkenny AC) won the 1,000m in 2:24.53 at the inaugural European Youth Olympic Trials today. The win guarantees him a place at the first-ever Summer Youth Olympic Games (YOG) to be held in Singapore through 14-26 August next.

Earlier this year English gave an indication of what was to come when he finished third in the 800m at the Woodie’s DIY Indoor championships at the Odyssey behind James McIlroy and David McCarthy. On that occasion he was one of three Letterkenny AC athletes to make the final, a superb achievement by the club.

Paul Scanlan (Leevale AC) finished eight in the final of the 400m in a time of 48.94, a new outdoor PB for him and just outside the 48.38 he ran indoors earlier this year.

Yesterday, Kate Veale (West Waterford AC) finished an excellent fourth in the 5k walk with a new PB of 23:01 and an entry to the Summer Youth Olympic Games. Emma Prendiville (Farranfore Maine Valley AC) was 13th.

Dempsey McGuigan (Finn Valley AC) threw 55.91m in the hammer qualification but did not make the final.
