iRun - Athletics Ireland

About the Programme

iRun is a teacher-led, schools based recreational running programme created for secondary school students. The aim of this programme is simple, we want to get more students moving and enjoying physical activity in a relaxed and non-competitive environment.

Who is the programme aimed at?

Post-Primary School aged children (13yrs+)

How long does it take?

Each programme is 6-weeks in duration and has a specific goal associated with it. Within each phase there are three levels students can choose to opt into: Gold, Silver, or Bronze. Gold is aimed at students who run regularly, Silver is aimed at students who run occasionally, and bronze is aimed at students new to running.

How is it delivered?

iRun is delivered by the class teacher during class time, as part of PE, or as a pre or post school activity. The programme can be carried out in either an indoor or outdoor setting utilising whatever facilities (i.e. school hall, outdoor pitch, etc.) are available in the school or surrounds.  Students follow the training programme provided in their iRun manual, track their progress in the training diary and fill in the journal to reflect on their experiences whilst taking part in the programme.
