The second day of Europe's top junior invitational meeting in Mannheim, Germany saw David McCarthy qualify for the world junior championships in Beijing in the 800 metres with a time of 1.49.93 (qualifying time is 1.51.00). The previous day David was marginally outside the standard in his number one event the 1500 metres when he finished a splendid 3rd in 3.48.60 (standard 3.48.00). David is confidently expected to achieve the 1500 standard by the close of qualification on the 23rd July. Once again Amy Foster was fractionally outside the standard for the 200 metres when she finished 4th overall in a time of 24.32 (standard is 24.30!). On the first day Amy did 11.93 for the 100 metres (qualifying standard 11.90). We wish Amy best of luck in her endeavours over the next few weeks to achieve the standard. Kalyn Sheeehan who already has the 400 metres hurdles standard was a bit below her best when finishing 5th in 61.35. With Jason Smyth achieving the standard for the 100 metres on Friday in Mannheim equalling the Irish junior record with 10.61 and Chris Quinn achieving the 400 metres hurdles standard on Friday in Gothenburg it has been an excellent weekend for Ireland's top junior athletes.
