Brendan has represented Ireland at the World Championships in Moscow in 2013 and at the London Olympics in 2012, competing in the 50km walk at both championships. At the Olympics in London he finished in 29th place and improved on this a year later to finish 25th at the World Championships in a new personal best of 3:54.24. He is coached by current 50km Race Walk World Champion Rob Heffernan. He competed at the 2016 Summer Olympics in the 50k walk where he finished in the top twenty, bettering his performance of the previous Olympiad. He then went on to finish 6th in the World Championships in Doha in 2019.
