You're viewing an article from our old website. While we've made efforts to retain all news from past Athletics Ireland websites, this article was created based on the old site's capabilities, so there may be formatting or layout issues on this page.

The Endurance Project Squad is now open for entries including previously selected athletes, subject to criteria requirements.

Selection Criteria and a link to sign up is included in the Information document, linked here.

Selected athletes will be invited to training camps, workshops, receive communication around athlete education and competition opportunities.

The aims of the project are to:

  • Improve the performance and retention of Irish endurance athletes with a focus on supporting the transition from junior athlete into successful senior competitor.
  • Provide collective training in conjunction with athlete and coach education opportunities in key areas of athlete development.
  • Coordinate training camp opportunities such as at altitude or warm weather locations, provide physio and other supports.
  • Develop communication channels with a focus on sustaining a more connected endurance performance athlete community.
  • Contribute to the overall High-Performance strategy.
  • Ultimately, increase the number of athletes capable of competing at the highest level of the sport to a degree of delivering individual, or team medals, at Global and European Championships.

The existing athletes' squad will now be asked to re-apply, to ensure they meet the new criteria set out in the information document, update their information, and confirm interest.

Selection criteria include:

Performance standards achieved in 2021 onwards, plus eligibility for any endurance runner that represented Ireland in European or Global U18, U20, U23 or Senior Championship since December 1st, 2019.

Athletes that had been performing at the level of the standards until 2022, and whose performance was limited by mitigating circumstances last year, should contact the National Endurance Coordinator as discretion may be used to include them.

Note: NCAA based athletes have been included on the list. Although they may not be in a position to participate in much of the squad activity, they are encouraged to accept their place as improving communication channels and improving their post-collegiate integration into the Irish endurance community is an important strand of the project.

Athletes will be asked to provide their coaches email address to ensure all members of the athletes' development team are aware of develop materials, activities, and critical communications.

Activity was limited by COVID-19 restrictions throughout 2020 and 2021, so we look forward to engaging athletes on more opportunities as we emerge from restrictions such as an envisaged Group Trip in April to Font Romeu with physio support.

Eligible and interested athletes should contact, National Endurance Coordinator, Matt Lockett.
