National Combined Events glory up for grabs

Ireland’s best multi-event athletes bid for national glory at the Irish Life Health National Indoor Combined Events in Athlone on Saturday (January 20).

The multi-events are steadily improving year on year and this was highlighted by Elizabeth Morland (Cushinstown) and Kate O’ Connor’s (St Gerard’s Dundalk) excellent 5th and 8th place finishes in the heptathlon at the European Athletics U20 Championships in Grosseto, Italy last summer. Kate O' Conor will compete this weekend for the Junior Women's national title in AIT.

Amy McTeggart (Boyne) will be the one to beat in the senior's women's category as she has won the senior women’s title for the last two years.

Shane Aston (Trim) has been one of the leading men in recent years in the multis and he will be aiming to retain the senior men’s crown he won last year with 3,597 points. Rolus Olusa (Clonliffe Harriers) looks likely to be one of his closest challengers.

There should be plenty to look forward to from the Juveniles right through to the Masters.

Leevale have a host of good youngsters with Kyle Ettoh, Harry Nevin and Reece Ademola all set to feature strongly in their respective U14, U15 and U16 age categories.

There are good entries in the underage girls’ events also with Laura Frawley (St. Marys Limerick A.C.) among the winners from last year – she is entered in the U15s.

In the U20 age group Donore Harriers pair Max Carey and Lara O’Byrne will be strong contenders while there is plenty of good competition in the Youths category

Ger Cremin (An Riocht), Kevin Byrne (DSD) won respective M35 and M40 titles last year and are entered in the same age groups this year. Peadar McGing (DSD) will be one of the main challengers in the M50.

Geraldine Finnegan (North East Runners) will be the favourite in the W50.
