Athletics Ireland and the Irish Schools Athletic Association in conjunction with Sport Ireland and European Athletics are delighted to announce the return of the iRunForFun programme for Spring 2024.

We are currently looking for 25 secondary schools to take part in this project. iRunforFun is a recreational running programme created for secondary school students. The aim of this programme is simple, we want to get more students moving and enjoying physical activity in a relaxed and non-competitive environment.  The programme is broken into three distinct training programmes, ‘Get Going’, ‘Keep Going’ and ‘Stay Going’.  Each programme is 6-weeks in duration, and we are specifically looking for schools to complete a programme in the spring.  Applications are operated on a first come basis and any applications after this will be accommodated in Autumn 2024.

This is a programme aimed at increasing activity levels of the entire schools by encouraging engagement in recreational running by students of all levels of fitness.  It also aims to give students an increased awareness of the importance of living an active and healthy lifestyle.

Teachers will use the 6-week iRunforFun training programme to encourage students to complete the programme and achieve their distance/time goal.  The programme is broken into three distinct training programmes, ‘Get Going’, ‘Keep Going’ and ‘Stay Going’.  Each programme is 6-weeks in duration and has a specific goal associated with it.  Within each phase there are three levels students can choose to opt into: Gold, Silver, or Bronze. Gold is aimed at students who jog or run regularly, Silver is aimed at students who jog or run occasionally, and bronze is aimed at students new to jogging or running. iRunforFun can be delivered during class time, as part of PE, or as a pre or post school activity.

Each student will receive a specially designed iRunforFun tracker which will include the training programme, training tips, goal setting, and much more. It will also provide students with a means whereby they can log and monitor their training progress.
