NATIONAL MARATHON TITLES ON THE LINE IN DUBLIN

POSTED:

The 2023 National Marathon Championships will take place this Sunday in conjunction with the Irish Life Dublin Marathon (October 29th).

The classic distance always provides plenty of drama as the likely favourites and their challengers tackle the 26.2 mile test around the streets of Dublin.

Irish marathon record holder Stephen Scullion (PB 2:09:49) will be aiming to win the National Marathon title for a second time.  Having placed second in the 2019 Dublin Marathon, the Clonliffe AC man will be looking to be in the mix with the elite athletes.

Another to keep an eye on as the race develops is Leevale’s Ryan Creech who set a course record of 01:05:47 at the National Half Marathon in Tullamore back in August, further highlighting his national marathon credentials following a 2:13:03 marathon debut in Seville earlier this year.

The 2022 national champion Martin Hoare will not be lining up this year as his preparations were put on hold with the arrival of his third child, he plans to be back for the 2024 Irish Life Dublin Marathon.

Drogheda & District look to have another strong representation as they bid to defend their superb 2022 team title. Rathfarnham WSAF will bid to regain the title they won in 2021, while Clonliffe Harriers will set out to try renew their dominance having taken the senior team title from 2016 – 2019.

In the women’s field reigning champion Courtney McGuire (Clonmel AC) is a late withdrawal due to a niggle. Ann Marie McGlynn (Letterkenny AC) who placed second to McGuire in the 2022 National Championships will now be eyeing up her first national marathon title. The 43-year-old has shown form this year over the half marathon distance winning the Belfast Half Marathon in September with 1:14:53. Gladys Ganiel (North Belfast Harriers) who placed third last year is likely to be in the mix for national medals.

Sorcha Loughnane led Donore Harriers to a dominant win in the senior women’s team title last year and the Dublin club look to have another strong lineup to call upon as they bid to go back-to-back for the first time. A bumper entry from Raheny Shamrock AC and a Clonmel team stacked with experienced marathoners should see them push Donore all the way.

There will be no shortage of drama in the race for category honours which look as competitive as ever with close to 3,500 championship entries set to battle it out.

The race start time is set for 8.45am with race results available on the Dublin Marathon website. National Marathon results will be made available after this year’s Dublin Marathon once they have been verified.
