It is with great sadness that Athletics Ireland mourn the passing of former Examiner journalist Brendan Mooney.

Brendan's career as the athletics correspondent with the Examiner , spanned the Montreal Olympics 1976 to the London Olympics 2012 and everything in between.

The positive way in which he reported athletics at all times was exceptional, clearly showing an empathy for the sport which was palpable.

His contribution to athletics in Ireland , at all levels, is inestimable.

As a sprinter Brendan had an accomplished career first with his native Ballinabrackey and then with Leevale following his move to Cork.

It is universally accepted in the sport that Brendan was a thorough gentleman.

To his wife Ann and entire extended Mooney family we express our deepest sympathy.

RIP Brendan
