The Spar Mile Challenge took place on 07/07/07 in 28 venues in Ireland. Spar teamed up with Athletics Ireland to challenge the nation to complete the classic distance of 1 mile in one of 28 locations throughout Ireland, and be part of a major national event. Great credit and thanks are due to the Meet Promoters and their helpers at the 28 venues around the country who worked very hard to promote and run the Mile Challenge. Over 2,000 people took part, and it is estimated that about half of these were not AAI members. The event proved to be a great family occasion with many families participating all over the country. Spar2 Mark Carroll ran a superb 4.06 mile at the Mardyke on Friday night to ‘kick start’ the Spar Mile Challenge in fine style. A good turnout of young and old, fast and slow, serious runners, fun runners, recreational joggers and walkers all participated in the Spar Mile Challenge. All were awarded a certificate with their time, a wristband to wear showing the time-they had achieved and a spike bag. Time bands matched the colours of the rainbow, and competition was high to see who could achieve the coveted red band for the 4-5 minute milers, whilst many others were very happy to be awarded the violet band for completing.
