"I've got to get back and prove to myself that I'm an athlete capable and good enough to be on the start line" Jamie Costin Jamie Costin acknowledges that he was "fierce lucky" not to have been paralysed after being involved in a car accident nine days before he was scheduled to compete at the 2004 Olympic Games. The Irishman has just finished a morning's training near Athens when a lorry, driving on the wrong side of the road, ploughed into his rental car. The result was two broken vertebrae as well as other fractures in his back. "One of the vertebrae literally exploded and I was very fortunate that it didn't sever the spinal cord," Costin tells BBC Sport.
