Double European Cross Country Champion Fionnuala Britton (Kilcoole AC) finished in third place at the European Indoor Permit meeting in Karlsruhe, Germany. Britton making her first appearance of 2013 on the indoor circuit recorded a time of 8.55.22.
The time is a new personal best for Britton and also inside the Athletics Ireland performance standard for the European Indoor Track & Field Championships. The race was won by Olympic 5,000m Champion Meseret Defar of Ethiopia in a time of 8.35.28.
Ciaran O’Lionaird (Leevale AC) also achieved the performance standard for the European Championships when he finished fifth at the New Balance Boston Indoor Games. Ó Lionáird ran 7:53.69 for 3,000m which was comfortable inside the standard of 8:00.00. The race was won by Hagos Gebrhiwet of Ethopia in 7:32.87
Paul Robinson (St Coca’s AC) was also in fantastic form as he scorched to an emphatic victory in the 1,500m at the Hunter Classic in Newcastle, Australia on the 2nd of February. The race was held in windy conditions as Robinson burst into the lead with 180m to go and pulled away from the field to win by 6 meters in a time of 3:42.54.
