4k the perfect distance

The GloHealth 4K Cross Country incorporating the Juvenile B Championships & Juvenile Relay Championships takes place in ALSAA, Dublin on January 9th.

The “short course,” as it’s known, came to life in 1998 with the introduction of the race to the World Cross Country Championships where Sonia O’Sullivan famously won along with the 8km that same weekend – the first athlete to achieve the feat.

The 4k is the perfect distance for track runners to get in some distance work and for distance runners to get some faster work in over the natural terrain of cross country. It is also a nice distance for runner of all abilities – not too short and not too long.

January 9th is the perfect time to use it as a springboard to the Indoor season or to kickstart your cross country season in the New Year or on to the roads.

The race is a national championships and team scoring is the first four runners across the line. It also is a part of the points system in place to award the Overall Cross Country Club of the Year at the end of the cross country season.

Events that count for this award are  Inter Club, Novice, Intermediate, 4k & Masters with points scoring as follows: 9pts - 1st, 7pts - 2nd, 6pts - 3rd, 5pts - 4th, 4pts - 5th, 3pts - 6th, 2pts - 7th and 1pt for all other teams.
