Health Benefits Associated with Running

POSTED:

You can transform your life by being physically active. Exercise helps with not only your physical health but your mental health. It doesn't take huge changes to make a difference. Start small. Just keep moving, whatever your age or ability and you’ll reap the rewards.

Only 1 out of every 3 people in Ireland is active on a regular basis, and 4 out of 5 children are still not getting enough exercise. All of this creates serious health risks. By staying active, you can reduce the risk of as many as 35 chronic diseases*.

Running in particular appeals to many as the preferred form of exercise as it doesn't cost a lot to take part, you can run at any time that suits you, and it’s something that can be continued throughout life.

Research suggests that regular running or jogging offers many health benefits including;

- Helping to build strong bones, as it is a weight bearing exercise
- Strengthening muscles
- Improving cardiovascular fitness
- Burning calories and help maintain a healthy weight.

Running versus Jogging

The difference between running and jogging is intensity. Running is faster, and demands more effort from the heart, lungs and muscles than jogging. Both running and jogging are forms of aerobic exercise so don’t worry if you can only manage a short walk – jog, it’s all about building up your level of fitness gradually.
