The inaugural Summer Coaching Camp for Co Louth athletes was held recently at the new Tartan track in Bush in the Cooley Peninsula. The 3-day camp, which ran from Wednesday 4 July to Friday 6 July 2007, with the athletes attending from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day. The camp was organised by Maria Duffy of St Peter’s AC, the Development Officer for athletics in the county. 49 athletes, ranging in age from 8 to 17, participated in the camp, where they experienced training at a level and intensity much higher than that to which they were normally accustomed. These athletes came from five different clubs in Co Louth, which are geographically spread throughout the county. The aim over the three days was to give our athletes an opportunity to – A. Have fun. B. Train on the new Tartan track in Bush. C. Mix with other athletes from the county and help each other. D. Experience different events not normally coached at their club. E. Touch base with some of Ireland's top coaches. F. Have fun. Louth Athletics Coaching Camp The coaches in attendance included Bart Rogers (RDO for North Leinster), Tom Clinton (Navan), Maria Duffy (St Peter's), Ann McGuinness (St Peter's), Gary Ryan (National Director of Coaching), Ciarán Conlon (Navan) took a group for High Jump drills and technique. Maria, Tom and Kathleen McConnell (St Peter's) took another group for standing Long Jump and High Jump testing. These tests produced some excellent results, indicating that Co Louth has some very strong talent indeed. This was a very successful camp in a terrific facility supported by the local community and is a great example of what small communities and clubs are doing around Ireland to develop the sport of Athletics.
