Mark English has now been added to Team Ireland for the 2019 IAAF World Championships in Doha, Qatar from 27th September to 6th October after Athletics Ireland received an invitation for Mark from the IAAF, today September 20th, as one of the best ranked athletes during the performance period in the Men's 800m.
The qualifcation system for the 2019 World Championships includes a 'quota' system with a target number of entrants set in each event, regardless of entry standards. Mark joins Phil Healy (200m) and Michelle Finn (3000m Steeplechase) who previously received invitations (September 10th) through the quota system.
They join Thomas Barr (400mH), Ciara Mageean (1500m) and Alex Wright (20k Walk) who were selected on September 7th, having achieved the entry standard during the qualification period, along with Brendan Boyce (50km Walk) and Stephen Scullion (Marathon) who were selected on May 27th at the end of the qualification period for their respective events.
Invitations also issued today for Siofra Cleirigh Buttner (800m) and Ciara Mageean (800m). However, Siofra will instead focus on Tokyo 2020 preparation after an injury disrupted end to her season, while Ciara will focus solely on the 1500m in Doha.
