International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD)

3 December 2024

Today we celebrate International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD) which is observed annually on the 3rd of December. Established by the United Nations in 1992, IDPD promotes the dignity, rights, and well-being of persons with disabilities. The theme this year is “ Amplifying the leadership of persons with disabilities for an inclusive and sustainable future”.

Athletics Ireland is on a journey to achieving the Xcessible Bronze Award through Active Disability Ireland. We want our clubs, coaches, athletes, and parents to join us on this journey. By signing the Sport Inclusion Disability Charter your club is making a statement of intent that you will do your best to provide an open and inclusive environment for people with disabilities  Sport Inclusion Disability Charter | Active Disability Ireland.

We congratulate the clubs and coaches who are already doing great work in the area of inclusion, and we encourage other clubs to get involved. Your club could make a big difference to the life of a person with a disability.

We look back over the last 12 months with a snapshot of some of the events we have supported for people with disabilities. We encourage our clubs to be open and inclusive and if unsure to ask.

We thank Active Disability Ireland, Sport Ireland, IWA-Sport, Vision Sports Ireland, Deaf Sport Ireland, Special Olympics and the Local Sports Partnerships for all their support and collaboration throughout the year. We look forward to 2025 with more opportunities for people with disabilities to participate in Athletics.
