Athletics Ireland is delighted to announce their team for the Celtic Cup taking place on Thursday in Glasgow. The inaugural Celtic Cup event is being run by Scottish Athletics, and is a team competition between Ireland Scotland and Wales. The competition will enjoy live TV coverage on BBC on Thursday evening from 7:00pm - 9:00pm. The Irish team will feature, Deirdre Ryan European High Jump finalist; Eileen O'Keeffe Irish European Championship Hammer representative; and James Nolan who will lead the challenge in the men's mile. The highlight of the event will be the women's 4 x 1500m. The Irish team of European Championship stars, Aoife Byrne, Roisin McGettigan, Mary Cullen and former providence athlete Deirdre Byrne, will be launching a major attack on the European Record already held by Ireland (Sonia O'Sullivan, Elaine Fitzgerald, Maria Lynch, Pauline Thom). The relay squad will have to average 4.20.4 to break the European record and will need to average 4.17.54 to break the World Record currently held by Australia. You get the feeling that neither record is safe. Irish Athletics is on a high after the success of the team in Gothenburg and are looking forward to the competition on Thursday evening. The team will be led by European Championship team manager Patsy McGonagle and team coach Brian Corcoran. For further queries please contact Patsy McGonagle on 087-2226112.
