Michael and Susan Mc Govern Sponsored Meeting Irishtown 14th July 2007 The Irish Milers Club held their last, largest and most successful meeting of the year in Irishtown on Saturday night, kindly sponsored by Michael and Susan Mc Govern. The night opened with an excellent 1500m which saw seven athletes run sub four minutes. Paul Pollock burst out from the gun to follow the pacemaker Steven Harkness through the first 800m. Pollock continued to run strongly on the third lap and was chased hard by Mark Kirwan, Damien Bateman and Eugene O'Neill. With 250m remaining, Kirwan went past Pollock only to fade slightly in the final 100m and be passed by Pollock (3.52.99), Bateman (3.53.98) and O'Neill (3.54.11) who finished as the top three. The men's 800m B race was an exciting event. Kevin Moriarty took over the lead with 300m remaining and looked like the winner with 150m to go only for 1500m athlete, Pat Mc Carton (1.55.88) and the much improved Ivan Kinahan (1.56.65) to pass the Raheny athlete in the final 50m. In the C event, Ian Barrett of DSD led from the gun to run sub two minutes for the win (1.59.25), closely followed by Dermott Mc Dermott (1.59.96) and Sean Hehir (2.00.37). Hazel Murphy ran a fantastic personal best of 2.09.94 in the women's 800m with Susan Byrne (2.18.70) and Louise Reilly of Catherina Mc Kiernan's club Annalee AC (2.19.25)battling it out for the minor places. The best was saved till last however as nine athletes lined up for the men's 800m A race. Simon Taggart took the field through the halfway mark in 53 seconds, closely followed by David Mc Carthy, James Nolan, Nially Tuohy and Conor Healy. Taggart pulled aside with 250m to go and the race was down to two men as Mc Carthy and Nolan pulled away from the field. Mc Carthy led into the homestraight by two metres but left a gap open between himself and the curb which the experienced Nolan spotted. With 50m remaining Mc Carthy began to tighten up and Nolan began to close. A very close finish saw McCarthy been given the win, both athletes given the same time of 1.50.08. Nially Tuohy ran a European Junior qualifying time with a new personal best of 1.51.24 only for the qualifying date to have passed. In all 16 athletes broke two minutes on the night. The IMC would like to thank Michael and Susan Mc Govern for their sponsorship of the event and NIKE for their annual support. We would also like to thank the officials who give their time in organising the meetings, the staff of Irishtown Stadium and the Dublin Board for providing us with our permits. The annual IMC v BMC match will be held in Trafford, Manchester, UK on August 12th in memory of Derek Ibbotson's 50th anniversary mile record. A development IMC team of 3 male and 3 female athletes in the 800m or 1500m will be travelling to the meeting to compete against the BMC England, BMC Scotland and BMC Wales. The IMC will cover travel costs to the meeting and the BMC will cover accommodation. Excellent prizemoney is also available for the event.
