Last Sunday saw the first annual Monavea Womens Mini Marathon take place very successfully at St Abbans AC in Co Laois. This was organized by the Fit4Life section of the club and it was a wonderful event held in bright sunshine. Almost 350 women ran, jogged and walked the 7K distance. The mini marathon began at St Abbans clubhouse and track and continued out onto the local roads before returning to finish on the track again. Bodies and spirits were revived after the race when refreshments were available to all participants. This was a superbly organized event with numerous club members acting as stewards to ensure everything ran smoothly. The committee was ably assisted by the Laois Sports Partnership in promoting and preparing for the event. All finishers got an excellent goody bag and individual certs are being posted out with the official finishing times. The first 200 entrants to register also got a t-shirt to commemorate the day. The Fit4Life section of the club has gone from strength to strength in recent times with over 100 active members meeting and training regularly. The club decided to hold the event to showcase their members efforts and promote the group to a broader audience. Noeleen Condron who was one of the organizers was delighted with the way the day turned out. "After all the hard work organizing the day it was great to see everyone coming along and enjoying themselves" she commented and is already turning her thoughts to next year. Ben Brennan, another of the organizers hopes to have twice as many entrants next year, "It was a great day and word will spread that everyone enjoyed themselves which will only increase our numbers again".
