The life and times of Sean and Maeve Kyle are chronicled in a fascinating new publication titled "The Remarkable Kyles" written by the highly respected sports journalist Denis O'Hara. This is primarily a story of unadulterated love between Sean (recently celebrated his 80th birthday) and Maeve (78) and their unstinting devotion to each other and to the sport of athletics to which they have devoted a large part of their lives. From the time the then Maeve Shankey from Kilkenny met Sean Kyle from Ballymena on a blind date in the early fifties theirs has been a wonderful odyssey. There are some marvellous vignettes in the book. Maeve's career as an athlete is of course well covered but due recognition is given to Sean for his remakable coaching skills. Their boundless enthusiasm shines through the book and as we well know that still burns brightly. The book gives a fascinating insight to society through the period. For myself I particularly enjoyed some of the old photographs and in particular the one of the old cinder track at Santry Stadium after a thunderstorm. Maeve is ahead of the field on a flooded track in the 200 (or is it the 400 )with no sign of a lane mark! Maeve in lane 8 in the Tokyo Olympics and the shock at the state of the track (pre synthetic). There is also Maeve winning a 400 metres (or is it 440 yards) on a board track at Wembley in 1962. I was certainly unaware of such a track. Then there is the photograph on July 5th 2006 where Maeve was conferred with an honorary Doctorate by the University of Ulster in recognition for her distinction as a sportswoman and in the development of coaching . There is a delightful foreword to the book by their close friend Ronnie Delany. The book is published by O'Hara Publications and costs £10.99. Go and buy it-it's inspirational.
