David Sweeney appointed as the National Field Event Coordinator

Athletics Ireland is delighted to announce that David Sweeney has been appointed as the fulltime National Field Event Coordinator and will commence his duties immediately. David has served as Athletics Ireland’s National Throws Coordinator in a part-time capacity since 2013, with that role growing into a half-time role in 2018.  That remit will now expand further and he will be tasked with driving the development of the Throws, Jumps and Combined Events event-groups in Ireland, as part of Athletics Ireland’s commitment to greater investment in coaching and coaches.

David’s involvement in competitive athletics was largely with Sparta AC in Derry and Dublin City Harriers. He represented Northern Ireland in Javelin, Discus and Shot Put and Ireland in Javelin and Shot Put. He has had a long association with the Throwing events, where he has been National Throws Coordinator from 2013 to present, has been involved in coaching Throws since 1999 and brings significant experience to the role.

He has been coaching Athletics Ireland National squads in Discus, Javelin and Shot Put and led the Throws coaching teams at both UCD and DCU. At National level, he has had coaching roles in many international events including Olympic Games, Australian Championships, European U18 Championships, European Throwing Cup, European Team Championship and several Multi-Nation events.

Since 2012, he has also been involved in the tremendous success of ‘Paralympics Ireland’ throwers as National Throws Coach. Since 2012 the throwers have collected 21 x Championship medals at European or Global level.  David spent many years in industry where he held roles with Standard Life, Hewlett Packard and Sherry Fitzgerald and brings a lot of those organisational skills to this new role.
