GRIGGS & TUTHILL READY FOR WORLD U20 FINALS

POSTED:

U20 3,000M FINAL 11.04PM (Irish Time)

Double European U20 gold medallist Nick Griggs (Mid Ulster AC) secured his place in 3000m final with a superbly judged 8:08.35Q in Wednesday’s heats.

17-year-old Griggs has continued his remarkable progress this season and currently boasts a PB of 7:53.40 which would rank as they 10th fastest in the stacked 3,000m final.

Habtom Samuel of Eritrea will be hoping to add to the 5000m bronze medal he earned on Monday. The 18-year-old, who placed third over 3000m in Nairobi last year, clocked a season’s best of 7:56.70 in the first round.

Kenya’s 17-year-old Kimonsong Kisalsak led the qualifiers with 7:55.60 and Ethiopia’s Diriba Girma – fifth in the 5000m on Monday – will also be ones to watch in the battle for gold.

Others expected to be in the medal mix are Rogers Kibet of Uganda and Kenya’s Felix Kiptarus Korir, plus Kibet’s compatriot Dan Kibet, who was eighth in this event 12 months ago.

The race will start at 11.04pm (Irish time ) and will be stream lived on the World Athletics YouTube Channel.

HAMMER THROW FINAL 9.11PM (Irish Time)

Nicola Tuthill (Bandon AC) secured qualifiction for tonight's hammer final with a 61.87m PB in Wednesday’s qualifying round..

The performance was made all the more impressive in that Tuthill had only returned from a broken and dislocated elbow in March, followed by months of one armed throws. The new 61.87m personal best ranks 9th of those entered in tonight’s quality hammer throw final.

Rachele Mori has thrown an Italian U20 record of 68.04m this year to lead the finalists by more than two metres.

Should all go to season’s form, Mori – who finished sixth in Nairobi last year – should be going for gold this time, but there could be a close battle for the other podium places.

Her closest challengers look to be German U20 champion Jada Julien who has gone beyond 65 metres this year with a PB performances of 65.90m.

The hammer final will start at 9.11pm (Irish time) and will be streamed live on the World Athletics YouTube Channel.
