Ciara Mageean has claimed the Irish 1000m record with a stunning 2.31.06 at the Wanda Diamond League this evening. Having recently become the first Irish woman to break 2 minutes for 800m, Mageean now takes over from Sonia O'Sullivan as the fastest Irish women over 1000m.

The performance was made all the more impressive by the calibre of athlete who lined up against Mageean on the start-line. The world 800m champion finished in 5th place, while the world 800m silver medallist was back in 9th. National records and personal bests littered the final standings and Mageean will feel that there is even more to come having been briefly impeded as she made her move.

The result places Mageean 9th on the 'all time list' over 1000m!
