On July 28th  2020 World Athletics announced that the qualification period for the Marathon and Race Walks  for the Tokyo Olympics will resume from September 1st  2020, rather than from December 1st 2020, as previously announced for all events. World Athletics have since clarified that this extension is limited to the achievement of the Entry Standards only; the accrual of points for World ranking and automatic qualification through placing at Gold/Platinum label marathon remains suspended until December 1st 2020 .

To meet the requirements for Olympic qualification eligibility during this period, Athletics Ireland is required to notify World Athletics and the Athlete Integrity Unit of any athletes that are attempting qualification during this period no later than 6 weeks before the planned event. It is therefore essential that any athletes planning a qualification attempt in the Marathon or Race Walks during the period September 1st 2020 to November 30th 2020 notify Athletics Ireland Performance director, or National Endurance Coordinator as soon as possible so that that information can be relayed to World Athletics.
