Triumphant close to Gaelscoil Iarfhlatha Tuam Active School week
Gaelscoil Iarfhlatha Tuam rounded off a hugely successful active school week with a mass participation relay for the whole school in the Tuam Palace grounds on Friday May 29th.
Students from naíonáin bheaga to rang a sé were cheered on by parents and schoolmates alike as they took part in a team building relay event which focused on participation, healthy lifestyle and fun. The relay was the accumulation of a week long active education nationwide initiative supported by the Department of Education and Sport Ireland.
Pupils from Gaelscoil Iarfhlatha enjoyed sporting activities including professional coaching in gymnastics, yoga, karate, basketball and tug of war as well as novel events from spontaneous dancing to wellie throwing and collectively running the distance from Tuam to Dublin. One of the parents also did aerobics classes with the pupils.
All pupils received Olympic Council of Ireland pins and will now do a number of projects on Team Ireland to create awareness in the school of Rio 2016.
An Príomhoide Colm Breathnach said: "We wish to thank all the parents, teachers and sponsors who contributed to our week. Active school week is a wonderful concept and reminds us how important physical education is to an all rounded education for our children. This was our first year taking part. Our students were exposed to many new sports they had never tried before and learned that participation and fun is just as important as winning. Each child received a medal as a reward for their effort. It was a hugely successful week and plans are already afoot for next year’s events.”
Míle buíochas do gach duine a thaca leis an scoil i rith na seachtaine. Bhí seachtain iontach againn.
