National Juvenile Championships Athlete Report

Saturday, July 4th marks the beginning of the GloHealth 2015 National Juvenile Championships. The event brings together the top Juvenile athletes from across the country in the U12-U19 age category.

Day one features a host of events including hurdles, steeplechase and long distance races on the track. While a thrilling day of field events begins with the discus, hammer, long jump, high jump and javelin all on show throughout the day.

Close Competition in the Hurdles

The U17 100m hurdle hosts a thrilling line up on Saturday as Ciara Neville (Emerald A.C), Molly Scott (St. L. O’Toole A.C.) and Shannon Sheehy (Cushintown A.C) go head to head.

Daniel Ryan (Moycarkey Coolcroo A.C.) competes on Saturday in the 100m hurdles event as well as the Long jump in the U17 division. Ryan narrowly missed out on first place recently in the Long Jump and will be aiming to move one step forward in Tullamore on Saturday. Keith Marks (Cushinstown A.C.) has been producing some impressive jumps over the past few competitions and will look to continue this form in the U19 Long Jump.

Local Star bids for success

Kevin Mc Grath (Bohermeen A.C.) will be in search of another quick time in the Boys U17 800m event after running 1:56.59 two weeks ago in Morton Stadium. Local athlete Mark Milner (Tullamore Harriers) is another one to watch out for in the 800m as he lines up for the U16 event. In the Girls 800m event, last month Nadia Power (Templemore A.C.) took first place the 1500m event in the GloHealth Irish Schools Track & Field Championship and will look to take the shorter event on in Tullamore.

Aiming to maintain impressive form

Katherine O’ Connor (Dundalk St.Gerards A.C.) recently claimed the Girls U16 Juvenile Combined Events. Consistent performances across all five events ensured that O’Connor finished in top spot. The Louth athlete competes in the U16 Long Jump on Saturday aiming to add another podium finish to her name.

Sommer Lecky (Finn Valley AC) also returns to the championships to challenge for the U16 Long and High Jump events. Lecky will be looking to repeat her performances from the 2015 Tailteann Games where she placed first in both events.

Michaela Walsh (Swinford A.C.) takes part later in the U18 Shot Putt, Michaela hit form at the Tailteann Games 2015 as she set two new records in the Shot Putt (16.38m) and Hammer Throw (60.66m) events.

Start Times

Track events begin at 10am with the U13 girls 60m hurdles and field events begin at 10am with the U16 boy’s discus. Check in for the event opens at 8:30am.
