Rhasidat Adeleke (Tallaght A.C.) delivered the standout performance of day one at the 123.ie National Senior Track and Field Championships at Morton Stadium today (July 25), powering to victory in the women’s 200m in a Championship Record 22.80 (-1.1m/s).

In claiming her first senior outdoor national 200m title, the Dubliner also dipped beneath the European Championships qualifying standard of 22.85 to book her place at Birmingham 2026 next month.

Speaking to Athletics Ireland after the race, Adeleke paid tribute to the home crowd whose support helped inspire her performance. She said: “It’s been a rough year. I didn’t really have any expectations coming in here. I just wanted to come out in front of a home crowd and show up, and whatever happened, happened.”

“I wouldn’t be able to do it without this crowd here, honestly. I knew that if I can do it anywhere, it’s at home, so thank you to everyone who supported me. So many sent me such nice messages. Sometimes you’re in a bad place and you think the worst of yourself, and then you see the amount of people showing you love and support. It just lifts my spirits.”

Lauren Roy (Fast Twitch A.C.) produced another excellent run to take silver in 23.49, while Lorena Harrison (Ratoath A.C.) claimed bronze in 24.61. The race saw defending champion Sharlene Mawdsley (Newport A.C.) unfortunately pull up sharply approaching the final 100 meters.

In the men’s 200m, Benjamin Richardson (Waterford A.C.) claimed his maiden senior national outdoor title in 20.64. Sean Aigboboh (Tallaght A.C.) finished strongly for silver in 20.75, while Mark Smyth (Raheny Shamrock A.C.) and Ryan Mulholland (Tallaght A.C.) shared the bronze medal after dead-heating for third in 21.16.

Earlier, David Kenny (Farranfore Maine Valley A.C.) opened the track programme by retaining his men’s 10,000m Race Walk title in commanding fashion. Kenny crossed the line in 38:56.24 to claim a fourth consecutive outdoor national crown.

The women’s 5,000m Race Walk produced one of the best finishes in recent years, ultimately finishing with Kate Veale (West Waterford A.C.) securing her 24th senior national title across indoor and outdoor championships. Veale clocked 24:18.38 to hold off Aisling Lane (Mullingar Harriers A.C.) in 24:21.03, while Leah O’Gara (Finn Valley A.C.) completed the podium in 24:22.91.

Abbie Sheridan (St. Peter’s A.C.) successfully defended her women’s 3,000m steeplechase title with an impressive winning time of 9:55.60. Róisín Treacy (Dundrum South Dublin A.C.) finished second in 10:20.53, with Dearbhla Allen (St. Peter’s A.C.) taking bronze in 10:46.02.

Finley Daly (Sligo A.C.) claimed his third men’s 3,000m steeplechase title in four years with an authoritative victory in 8:59.70. Jack Dee (St. Peter’s A.C.) finished second in 9:30.93, while Adam Kirk-Smith (Derry City Track Club) earned bronze in 9:44.48.

The field events also produced a series of high-quality performances.

Olympian Eric Favors (Raheny Shamrock A.C.) successfully defended his men’s shot put title with a best throw of 19.47m. Theo Hanlon (Suncroft A.C.) claimed silver with 15.81m, while Callum Keating (North Cork A.C.) took bronze with 14.72m.

Michaela Walsh (Swinford A.C.) captured her seventh outdoor national shot put title – and first since 2023 – with a winning throw of 13.11m. Laura Frawley (Nenagh Olympic A.C.) finished second with 11.90m ahead of Alana Frattaroli (Limerick A.C.), who threw 11.53m.

Conor Cusack (Lake District A.C.) retained the men’s javelin title with a best effort of 69.09m in difficult conditions. Oisín Joyce (Lake District A.C.) finished second with 64.05m, while Michael Jordan (Naas A.C.) claimed bronze with 61.17m.

Kate Joyce (Dundrum South Dublin A.C.) celebrated her first senior outdoor national javelin title after producing a winning throw of 50.21m. Leanne Healy (Marian A.C.) took silver with 46.03m, while Ailbhe Gordon (Greystones and District A.C.) secured bronze with 45.33m.

The women’s high jump proved one of the competitions of the day with Daena Kealy (St. Abbans A.C.) producing a lifetime best of 1.87m to secure the national title. Siún Quinn (Brothers Pearse A.C.) cleared 1.80m for silver, while Tara O’Connor (Dundalk St. Gerards A.C.) claimed bronze with 1.75m. David Cussen (Old Abbey A.C.) added a sixth outdoor national high jump title to his collection after clearing 2.15m in the men’s high jump.

Daphni Doulaptsi Teeuwen (Raheny Shamrock A.C.) successfully defended her women’s triple jump title with a winning leap of 13.06m. Saragh Buggy (St. Abbans A.C.) claimed silver with 12.47m, while Caoimhe McDonagh (South Sligo A.C.) secured bronze for the second successive year with 11.98m.

Joseph Gillespie (Finn Valley A.C.) won the men’s triple jump title with a best leap of 14.19m. Darragh Fahy (Loughrea A.C.) finished second on 13.91m, while Daniel De Antolin-Rodriguez (Ratoath A.C.) took bronze with 13.61m.

Attention also turned to Sunday’s track finals, with a host of qualifying heats taking place throughout the day.

Defending women’s 800m champion Alex O’Neill (Limerick Track A.C.) safely progressed after winning her heat in 2:04.91, while Cian McPhillips (UCD A.C.) comfortably advanced in the men’s 800m with 1:51.85.

Sophie O’Sullivan (Ballymore Cobh A.C.) looked in complete control in the women’s 1500m, leading from the gun to win her heat in 4:22.54. Jodie McCann (Dublin City Harriers A.C.) claimed the second heat in 4:21.85 ahead of Laura Nicholson (Bandon A.C.), with both progressing comfortably to Sunday’s final.

The men’s 1500m promises to be one of Sunday’s highlights after Andrew Coscoran (Star of the Sea A.C.), Cathal Doyle (Clonliffe Harriers A.C.) and Nick Griggs (CNDR Track) all safely negotiated their heats. Doyle posted the quickest qualifying time of 3:52.23, ahead of Coscoran (3:52.31) and Griggs (3:52.66).

The 400m heats also set the stage for Sunday’s medal races, with Sophie Becker (Raheny Shamrock A.C.) and Rachel McCann (North Down A.C.) among the standout performers in the women’s competition. Jack Raftery (Donore Harriers A.C.) remains firmly on course for a third consecutive national outdoor title after recording an impressive 46.34 in qualifying.
