Andrew Coscoran (Star of the Sea AC) has broken the Irish 1500m record with a blistering 3.33.49 at the World Indoor Tour Meet in Birmingham this afternoon (Feb 25th).

Coscoran’s time broke the 3:35.40 indoor record set by Marcus O'Sullivan in 1988, while also bettering Ray Flynn’s outdoor 3.33.50 set in Oslo in 1982.

It was a perfectly judged race from the 26-year-old who sat in the slipstream of the leading trio of athletes before unleashing a record-breaking final kick from the 150-meter mark to become the fastest ever Irish athlete over 1500m.

Coscoran finished one place ahead of his international teammate Luke McCann (UCD AC) who also crossed the finish inside the old indoor record, clocking a personal best of 3.34.76 for fourth place.

Attention for both Coscoran and McCann will now turn to the upcoming European Indoor Championships where both athletes will be targeting leading placings in the 1500m medal decider.

Nick Griggs (Mid Ulster AC) completed the Irish trio competing in today’s record-breaking World Indoor Tour 1500m race. Griggs raced tactically superb, settling in behind a train of athletes for much of the race before chasing down his own Irish U20 indoor record which he would better by almost 4 seconds.

Griggs would cross in 7th place in 3.39.40, which also bettered the U20 outdoor 1500m record time set by Cian McPhillips in 2021 (3.40.56).

The race was ultimately won by Neil Gourley (GBR) in 3:32.48 NR with Adel Mechall (ESP) second in 3:33.28 NR.

Jack Raftery (Donore Harriers) was also in action in Birmingham today, posting an impressive 46.66 for 3rd place in the 400m which was just outside his personal best.
