Anna Gavigan (Lambay Sports Academy) broke the Irish U23 Discus Throw record at a World Athletics Challenger Tour event in Italy last night (Tuesday June 2nd).
Competing at the EAP XX Atletica 2000 Meeting in San Vito al Tagliamento near Venice, Gavigan threw a massive 57.38 metres in the fifth round of the competition. This added over 30cm to the previous Irish U23 record held by Patricia Walsh (57.06m) since 1982 and improved Gavigan’s lifetime best by over two metres.
The Dubliner has now firmly cemented her place in third on the Irish senior all-time list behind Walsh (57.60m) and national record holder Niamh Fogarty (58.40m).
Coached by David Sweeney, Athletics Ireland High Performance Field Event Co-ordinator, Gavigan is now closing in on the Athletics Ireland ‘B’ Standard for the European Athletics Championships in Birmingham which stands at 57.80m.
