Emily Maher is rewarded for her narrow win in the 100 metres over Derval O’Rourke at the weekend with a place in the team. The team also includes promising athletes Kelly Proper and Colm Rooney. Proper, who is fresh from claiming Gold at the recent Irish Track and Field Championships will compete in the Long Jump while Rooney, who finished second to David Campbell in the 1500m at the Nationals, will run in the Mile. Patsy McGonagle Athletics Ireland’s team manager said, “This is a unique event format in the athletics calendar. It is a great opportunity for some of our developing athletes to take on the Scots and Welsh in a team event.” The Celtic Cup also offers a unique financial and media coverage incentive to all athletes taking part. There is a total prize fund of $24,000, with each individual event winner receiving $1,000. Also, Sky Sports are giving live coverage to the event.
