Athletics Ireland was delighted to support the 2026 Global Solidarity Run, which saw more than 700 people come together at the Sport Ireland National Cross Country Course in Dublin to celebrate inclusion, diversity and the power of sport to bring communities together (Sunday Oct 11th).
Organised by Sanctuary Runners, the third annual event brought together participants from more than 40 Sanctuary Runners groups across Ireland, alongside members of diplomatic communities, elite athletes and runners of all backgrounds and abilities.
The 5km event was officially opened by President Catherine Connolly, a patron of Sanctuary Runners, who highlighted the importance of solidarity with people experiencing forced displacement and extreme poverty around the world.
Speaking ahead of the run, President Connolly praised the initiative as a powerful demonstration of community spirit and the importance of embracing diversity.
Since its establishment in 2018, Sanctuary Runners has grown into a nationwide movement, with 44 active groups creating opportunities for people of all nationalities and backgrounds to connect through running, walking and volunteering.
The Global Solidarity Run also formed part of a wider international initiative, with people across more than 50 countries coming together through sport to demonstrate solidarity and promote a sense of belonging.
Athletics Ireland is proud to support initiatives that demonstrate how athletics can break down barriers, build friendships and strengthen communities.
The event was supported by Irish Aid, the Department of Foreign Affairs, the Ireland Funds, the European Commission Representation in Ireland, Sport Ireland and Athletics Ireland.
Congratulations to Sanctuary Runners, all the organisers, volunteers and everyone who took part in making this year’s Global Solidarity Run such a success.
