The US collegiate cross country season got under way over the weekend. At the Stony Brook University XC Invitational Daire Bermingham from Stony Brook (where Andy Ronan is coach) was fourth in 17:36.45 for the 6k distance. At the same meet Ashling Baker from Iona (Mick Byrne coach)was third in the women's 4k race in 16:03.92. Junior Richard Yeates from Providence College was fifth in 26:54 at the New Hampshire Dual Meet. Irish junior David McCarthy is the latest to join Ray Treacy's Providence team. At the Appalachian State Covered Bridge Open Jamie McCarthy from Coastal Carolina was 18th in 26:05.42 for the 8k distance. Fellow Cork runner Joyce Curtin has joined the women's squad at Coastal. Ciaran O'Lionaird from Michigan University was ninth in 32:28.00 for 10k at the Michigan Open at Hudson Mills Metropark . Other athletes to compete with Michigan included distance runner Billy Bolster and the late Brendan O'Reilly of RTE. Sligo man Brendan Gilroy, head coach at McNeese, has recruited Stephen Scullion, Jordan Neil and Mark Hoey. The late Fanahan McSweeney set several records during his stay there. Eimear O'Brien has transferred from Tom Aspel's Arkansas Tech to join Michelle Scott's Western Kentucky.
