Bandon AC track opened by Olympian Phil Healy

16 April 2026

Bandon AC officially opened its state-of-the-art athletics facility on the 11th of April and despite wet conditions a strong turnout came to the event in Bandon to see Olympian and European medallist Phil Healy cut the ribbon.

The project has been in motion for the club since planning permission at the eight-acre site at Clancoolbeg was passed in early 2021.

The six-lane track and associated facilities will be operated solely by the club and were supported by funds from a Sports Capital Grant issued by the Department of Culture, Communications and Sport, as well as private fundraising and further support from a Capital Fund Scheme grant from Cork County Council.

The project stands as a testament to what can be achieved through community-driven initiative and long-term planning.

Olympians Phil Healy, who is a member of the club, and Nicola Tuthill, who began her career at Bandon AC, were both present to open the facilities.

Athletics Ireland President Brid Golden, and CEO Hamish Adams attended the opening

After a five-year journey, ambitious plans are in place to develop a complementary indoor training facility on the same site, subject to funding.

The club truly begins a new era, and will celebrate with the following upcoming events.

Bandon AC Road Race

The annual Bandon AC Road Race remains a cornerstone of the Cork road racing calendar, attracting strong participation from competitive athletes and recreational runners alike. The next edition, scheduled for 30 April 2026, is expected to draw another large and competitive field, reflecting the club’s strong community engagement and organisational excellence.

Catherine Duggan Open Sports

The Catherine Duggan Open Sports is one of the club’s flagship events, honouring the legacy of a hugely influential figure in Bandon athletics. The meet attracts athletes from across Munster and beyond, providing high-quality competition across track and field disciplines. It serves as both a celebration of the club’s heritage and a key competitive opportunity within the regional calendar.

Summer Camp

The Bandon AC Summer Camp remains a key entry point for young athletes, introducing children to athletics in a structured and enjoyable environment and supporting long-term participation and development.
