Thomas Barr has secured his place in the semi-final of the 400m hurdles at the World Athletics Championships in Oregon this evening (July 16th). Barr once again produced a big performance when it mattered, clocking a season’s best of 49.15 to cross in second place in heat 4 to secure an automatic qualifying spot for Monday’s semi-final. It was a tricky heat on paper, but Barr showed all his big race experience to come home powerfully over the final two hurdles to post the 3 fastest time of all the qualifiers. The Ferrybank star will now return for the semi-final at 2.03am on Monday 18th.

Andrew Coscoran also ran a superb first heat in the men’s 1500m, with the Star of the Sea athlete finishing in 3rd place in his heat to claim one of the six the automatic qualifying spots in 3.36.36 SB. Coscoran settled in midfield from the gun and avoided any trouble before gradually working his way into an auto qualifying position during the final lap. His now customary final 100m kick saw him pick off several athletes on the run in to safely secure his passage to Monday morning’s semi-final (3.00am Irish time).
