Irish team set for Finnish challenge
Ireland kick-off their bid for promotion to the European Team Championships Super League in the First League in Vaasa, Finland tomorrow.
The first day of action sees some select events with the 110m and 100m hurdles, 100m, 200m, 400m and 400m hurdles before a hectic weekend of action.
Thomas Barr (Ferrybank) will be looking to make a strong statement over the long hurdles and provide some energy for the team going into the weekend in his 400m hurdles heat.
Team captains Sean Breathnach (Galway City Harriers) and Kerry O’Flaherty (Newcastle) will look to provide encouragement and advice on, and off, the track and field.
Breathnach will be in the shot put with O’Flaherty in the 3,000m steeplechase. They will provide the experience alongside the likes of Paul Robinson (St Coca’s) in the 1500m and Mark English (UCD) in the 800m.
While there is plenty of experience in the team there is also a good blend of Ireland’s up-and-coming stars with the likes Sharlene Mawdsley (Newport), Ciara Neville (Emerald), Gina-Akpe Moses (Blackrock-Louth).
