Many of Ireland’s top track and field athletes will be in action this weekend including Irish 400m Hurdles Record holder Thomas Barr (Ferrybank AC) who goes in the IAAF Diamond League Meeting in Doha (15 May).
High Quality Event
The high quality diamond league meetings attracts the very best athletes in the world with Barr securing his spot in the event after running a time of 49.08 seconds at the Tom Jones Memorial Meet in Florida on the 24th of April. That performance also earned Barr the accolade of European Athlete of the Month for April. Barr will face a strong field on Friday including world leader Bershawn Jackson of the United States who has run a time of 48.47 seconds this year.
Loughborough International & European Race Walking Cup
A trio of Irish hurdlers will contest the Loughborough International on Sunday, 17th of May. European Indoor representative Ger O’Donnell (Carrick on Shannon AC) and Ben Reynolds (North Down AC) will go in the 110m hurdles while Christine McMahon (Ballymena and Antrim AC) goes in the women’s 400m hurdles event. Also on Sunday Brendan Boyce (Letterkenny AC) and Leevale AC duo Alex Wright and Luke Hickey will be competing in the 20k Walk at the European Cup of Race Walking in Murcia, Spain.
Highgate 10k
Ireland’s endurance athletes go the distance on the track at the Highgate 10k in London on Saturday, 16th of May. European Indoor 1500m finalist John Travers (Donore Harriers AC) steps up to the 10k and is joined by Mark Kenneally (Clonliffe Harriers AC), Brandon Hargreaves (Dundrum South Dublin AC) and Mick Clohisey (Raheny Shamrock AC). Maria McCambridge (Dundrum South Dublin AC) is the sole Irish representative in the senior women’s event.
