Big weekend of action for Ireland’s best

Rose-Anne Galligan leads the charge for Ireland’s elite athletes in the heats of the 1500m at the World Indoor Championships in Portland, Oregon this evening (March 18th).

The Newbridge athlete takes to the green indoor track in the first heat of two at 20:35 Irish time which will be televised . The first three in each heat and the three fastest  qualifiers advance to the final at 2:18am Irish time on March 20th. Joe Gough (West Waterford) competes at 20:15 on Saturday in the invitational O60 men’s 800m.

Ireland’s leading walkers take to the roads of Dudince, Slovakia tomorrow for the IAAF Race Walking Challenge. Robert Heffernan (Togher) will lead Brendan Boyce (Letterkenny) and Cian McMenamon (Westport) in the 20km while Leevale’s Alex Wright will tackle the 50km. Heffernan said: "This is my first outdoor race of the year and my first 20k for two years so I will see where I am at in what is a very important year for me."

On Sunday Fionnuala McCormack (Kilcoole) takes to the roads for the 2016 United Airlines NYC Half on Sunday, March 20, which will see 20,000 runners of all ages and abilities hit the streets of Manhattan.

The two-time Olympian will be looking to improve on her half marathon best of 71:33 which she set in Lille last year.
