Highgate 10k
Double European Cross Country Champion Fionnuala Britton (Kilcoole AC) finished in fourth place at the Highgate 10k in London on Saturday, 10th of May. The race was billed as a head to head between Britton and the current European Cross Country Champion Sophie Duarte of France.
Jo Pavey of Great Britain was also lining up, the pace was set up to bring the athletes under the 32.15 qualification standard for the European Track and Field Championships in Zurich. After passing the halfway point in 16.09, Britton started to lose ground on the leaders and struggled to maintain the pace over the second half of the race.
Pavey proved the strongest and won the race in a time of 32.11.04 with Britton finishing in fourth place in a time of 32.57.49. Maria McCambridge (Dundrum South Dublin AC) who was recently announced on the Irish team in the marathon for the European Championships finished in seventh place in a time of 33.19.43.
Irish U23 Record
Away from the action in Highgate, Sarah Collins (Finn Valley AC) was also competing in a 10,000m race at the Big East Championships in Villanova. Collins won the race in a time of 33.36.36 which was a new Irish U23 Record. The time broke the old record of 33.37.4 held by Aisling Ryan which had stood since 1988.
