Dean Casey (Ennis Track Club) has come thirteenth in the men’s 5,000m World Athletics U20 Championship final. The Clare man produced a strong, tactical performance throughout the 5,000m, showing a maturity in his running far beyond years. Casey maintained his position within the leading pack of the 22-man competition, crossing the line with 14:37.79 on the clock. The gold medal winner Ethiopia’s Addisu Yihune clocked a time of 14:03.05.
After a strong opening day for Team Ireland at the World Athletics U20 Championships, the Irish singlet returns to the Cali stadium tomorrow at 6:05pm with Lucy McGlynn taking to the women’s 400mH heats.
Day 2 Preview:
Lucy McGlynn (Tir Chonaill AC) takes to the heats of the women’s 400mH on Day 2 of the World Athletics U20 Championships, she joins Heat 6 at 6:05pm (Irish time). McGlynn has had a stellar season this year, securing a bronze senior championship medal and numerous gold medals in the junior and juvenile national championships. The Donegal hurdler also set a 1-minute flat PB in the 400mH in recent months. In order for McGlynn to progress to the semi-finals, she will need to be one of the first three to cross the line in her heat, or secure one of the overall six fastest times.
Lucy May Sleeman (Leevale AC) takes to Heat 2 of the women’s 100m at 6:37pm on Day 2 of the World Athletics U20 Championships. Sleeman has had a fiery season this year, including her 100m PB performances of 11.63, which secured her National U20 100m Championship title win in recent weeks. The sprint star will need to be one of the first three to cross the line in her heat or have one of the three fastest overall times to qualify for the semi-finals.
After a record-breaking performance on Day 1 of the World Athletics U20 Championships Reece Ademola (Leevale AC) returns to the Long Jump Pitt for the men’s final at 10:16pm Irish time. In his opening round of the qualifying competition Ademola set the National U20 Record and his PB to 7.76m.
