Ciara Mageean has continued her outstanding 2023 season with another record-breaking performance at the Diamond League Meet in Brussels this evening (Sept 8th). The City of Lisburn AC athlete finished second behind Scotland’s Laura Muir to smash her own Irish record in a blistering time of 3:55.87.

Mageean, who finished ahead of Muir at the recent World Championships in Budapest, raced with the leading pack up to the bell before going with Muir’s race-defining move which saw the pair stretch clear of a world class field with 300 meters to go.  Mageean stayed on the heels of Muir rounding the final bend but would ultimately settle for second place in yet another huge performance for the Portaferry star.

Muir clocked a winning time of 3:55.34 SB with Nelly Chepchirchir crossing for third in 3:56.93.

Today’s result comes hot on the heels of Mageean’s brilliant 4th place finish at the World Championships in Budapest where she produced the run of her life in one of the strongest women’s 1500m fields ever to take to a global final.
