Seamus Clarke produced one of the standout Irish performances on Day Four of the World Athletics U20 Championships in Oregon, setting a new National U20 Record in the men’s 5000m Race Walk.
Clarke delivered an outstanding performance to finish 5th in the world in 19:28.27, taking more than 17 seconds off his previous best of 19:45.34, set in Tullamore last month.
Matthew Newell also represented Ireland strongly in the final, finishing 22nd in 20:26.11.
There was further impressive Irish representation in the 400m hurdles, with Ethan Dewhirst securing his place in the men’s final. Dewhirst clocked 50.53 for third in his semi-final to guarantee himself a top-nine finish at the championships.
Des O’Neill signed off his campaign with a 51.28 personal best for seventh in his semi-final, while Ellis McHugh also produced a PB of 58.49 to finish fifth in her women’s 400m hurdles semi-final and 15th overall.
RELAY SQUADS BOW OUT
Ireland’s women’s 4x400m relay team produced a brave showing in a competitive heat, clocking 3:40.06 for seventh in Heat 2.
The men’s 4x100m squad also delivered another consistent performance, safely getting the baton around in 40.39 to finish fourth in Heat 2. While progression proved just out of reach, both young relay squads gained valuable championship experience on the world stage.
