Beckford at his best for Cork. Evergreen Jamaican, James Beckford, Olympic and World silver medallist, renowned at all track and field venues as one of the great characters of the sport, warmed up for the 56th.Cork City Sports with a huge jump of 8.37m when winning the long jump in Warsaw last weekend. This represented the third best jump in the world for 2007 and was Beckford's furthest leap since 2001. It comes as a timely boost to the Jamaican in his quest to get among the medals again this year at the World Championships in Osaka with Cork an important stepping stone along the way. He will surely need to be at his best again to win at the Mardyke venue as he will face a very much in-form Chris Tomlinson from Britain fresh from his recent success in Prague and the South American champion Rogerio Bispo of Brazil. The Athens Olympics runner-up John Moffitt supported by two other top Americans, Travell Quinley and Bashir Ramzy and the German Nils Winter ensure that this is likely to be the best long jump competition so far staged in Europe this year Irish Schools' champion Eoin Hannon from Tipperary and national champion Stephen Fleming should find inspiration from the occasion and could well set personal bests on June 30.
