If evidence were needed that the Fit4Life programme has what it takes to invigorate your club with new members and provide a much needed focal point for re-creational runners and walkers in your community, then you need look no further than the trio of Fit4Life host clubs in Galway. Between them Galway City Harriers, Craughwell AC and Athenry AC have welcomed well over 100 new members into their clubs in the few short months since they commenced the Fit4Life programme. In Galway City, Bernie Kelly and her ever growing army of joggers are becoming a familiar sight on the streets around their base camp of the West Side Library. In the driving rain last Tuesday night as many as 45 new members were out clocking up the miles. In Craughwell, a small village in East Galway, Tony Nevin is the driving force behind the Fit4Life programme, and the clubs facilities at Craughwell NS resemble a training camp in the Kenyan Rift Valley with the number of different groups training with their own tailor made session. In Athenry the Fit4Life programme has contributed enormously to the ever increasing female membership in the club which has now hit record levels. Maria Hehir, Maeve Noone and Alan Burke have done tremendous work in developing this welcome addition to the club. This Sunday the three clubs are coming together for the inaugural Craughwell AC Fit4Life 5k. This event is free to Craughwell AC, GCH and Athenry AC fit4life members. All other entries will be 5 euro if pre-registered by email (to Tony) or 10 euro on the day. Though predominately for fun-runners, athletes of all levels are very welcome to attend. An accurate, timed course will be provided - and even a few sandwiches - but the emphasis is firmly on participation and fun. If you plan on taking part, it would be great if you could contact Tony at the fit4life@o2.ie address - it will make it easier for us to organise it if we know about people in advance. When: 27th January 08 @ 1.00 pm (registration from 11.30 AM=>12:30PM).Where: St Michael's Hall Craughwell (near the level crossing).
