This Sunday sees the return of top class international race walking to Dublin. The National 20k championships and Dublin Grand Prix of racewalking takes place in the Phoenix Park. These races will feature athletes from over 15 nations and many of these will be seeking standards for this years World Championships in Osaka. Those competing will include Jane Saville from Australia who took bronze in the Athens Olympics. Athletics fans will remember Jane as the unfortunate athlete who was disqualified outside the stadium while leading the Olympic 20k in Sydney. The mens 50k will feature Alex Schwazer who won the bronze medal at the World Championships in Helsinki. The Irish challenge will be led by Colin Griffin who competes in the 20k. Colin has already secured the qualifuication standard for this years World Championships at 50k and will be joined in Osaka by Olive Loughnane, Jamie Costin and Robert Heffernan. The action starts early at 8.30 am when the mens 50k gets underway. The senior womens 20k race begins at 11.30 while the senior mens 20k starts at 12.00. There are also races for juveniles starting at 10.00 am. These will feature a number of guests from the UK and will provide good competition for the young Irish racewalkers. The juvenile have the added incentive of international competition as the Nihill Shield will be presented to the best performing nation.
