A blistering final 100m saw Mark English go from eighth place to first to win the 800m Diamond League meet in Birmingham.

The Donegal man kicked on strongly on the final bend to win in a time of 1:45.94 and outpace Jamie Webb, Spencer Thomas and Alfred Kipketer for gold.

English, who won European Indoor bronze in Glasgow back in March, won in a season's best, but the winning time was just outside world standard (1:45.80) with next month’s World Athletics Championships in Doha on the horizon.

Sarah Healy and Thomas Barr were also in Diamond League action earlier on in the day, with Healy running a huge 4:40.72 PB in the mile to finish 12th behind Konstanze Klosterhalfen on what was her first Diamond League start.

Thomas Barr came home in 5th place in the 400m hurdles in a time of 50.16.
