Local club member Buckley ran 21.10 to win ahead of Adrian Curley Tullamore Harriers 21.35 with Ben White Mullingar Harriers third in 21.51. Pauline Curley Tullamore Harriers was 7th overall in 23.13 well clear of Jane Ann Healy from Naas. John Donegan and Deirdre Lambe both of Tullamore Harriers took the Masters titles. Details from Liam Dunne 086-3800074, Mick Hayden 086-8550396 Sunday September 2nd Ballinagar 5 Mile Check out our website offalyathletics.com Ferbane Athletic Club 4th Annual Hugo Smith Memorial Race The fourth Annual Hugo Smith Memorial Road Race, run by Ferbane Athletic Club was held on Sunday last 24th June. There was a good standard of competition among the mix of Senior Men, Senior Ladies, Veteran Men and Veteran Ladies competitors who set out on the four mile course. Athletes representing all four provinces from clubs in ten Counties - Cavan, Offaly, Westmeath, Kildare, Galway, Dublin, Laois, Kilkenny Clare and Meath contested the event. These athletes were accompanied by a group of people who walked the course to raise much needed funds for the West Offaly Branch of the Irish Kidney Association. The race started outside the Convent in Main Street and proceed to Gallen Cross, across Gallen Bridge, turning left ½ mile out the road to bring them on a circuit around by the Canal Line , back to Gallen Bridge and back into town to the finish outside Gallen United Soccer Grounds. Sunday afternoon’s weather was ideal for running and these conditions made for a well contested event. Paul Buckley from Ferbane Athletic Club set the early pace, followed by a group of athletes – Adrian Curley, Tullamore Harriers, Chris McLoughlin, Donore Harriers, Catch Grennan, Tullamore Harriers, Ben White, Mullingar Harriers and John Donegan, Tullamore Harriers. By the first mile marker Paul Buckley had gained an advantage over the other athletes and he increased this advantage through two and three miles. Paul eventually crossed the line in a time of twenty one minutes and ten seconds, 25 seconds ahead of Adrian Curley in Second place. Ben White from Mullingar Harriers finished strongly in third place overall and first man over 50 years just four seconds ahead of John Donegan, Tullamore Harriers. In the ladies race Pauline Curley from Tullamore Harriers, fresh from her recent quality performance in the Evening Herald Mini Marathon, lead the ladies from start to finish, finishing in an impressive time of twenty three minutes and thirteen seconds to win an impressive fourth successive title. Deirdre Lambe was next lady home and winner of the O/40 ladies category in 26.21, just seven seconds ahead of Jane Anne Healy from Naas. Maura Dervan from Mullingar Harriers was second in the ladies O/40 category. Ferbane Athletic Club would like to congratulate and thank all Runners and Walkers who took part in the event. A special word of thank you to all those who supported this year’s charity – West Offaly Special Olympics Club. Once all sponsorship cards have been returned the Club expects to make a generous donation to this very worthy cause. The Club would also like to thank all those who helped with the event in any way. This list includes the Gardai, Stewards, those who worked at registration, at the finish line, in preparing the course and in providing refreshments after the race.
