European Masters Shot Put & Discus titles for Connemara's Breathnach
There was great news for one of Ireland’s most prolific throwers on Monday in Nice, France.
Current national indoor and outdoor Shot Put Champion Sean Breathnach (Galway City Harriers) had a double win at the European Masters Games in the M35-45 category throwing 47.18m in the Discus beating French and Swiss throwers for the top of the podium. Sean then returned to the stadium on Tuesday to dominate the Shot Put with 17.28m with French athletes picking up silver and bronze medals over 2.8m behind.
Sean has had a magnificent season throwing lifetime bests in Discus and Shot Put at an age when most athletes are turning to more sedate activities. Sean sees age as no barrier and has technically improved in all events as well as having an uninterrupted strength training period over the winter that has reaped great dividends. His first thoughts after the victory were on breaking new boundaries next year and going past 18m for the Shot Put and maybe pushing for the long standing Irish Indoor Record of 18.07m.
