European 1500m bronze medallist Andrew Coscoran (Star of the Sea AC) headlines a strong Irish team for the second edition of the World Athletics Road Running Championships in Copenhagen next month.

The championships which take place in the Danish capital on September 19^th and 20^th, will feature nine athletes from Ireland competing across three events – the Mile, 5km and Half Marathon.

Balbriggan native Coscoran claimed a stunning medal at the recent European Athletics Championships in Birmingham timing his kick to perfection to make his first senior international podium and he will be hoping to produce another solid performance in Copenhagen. Joining him in the Mile will be Cathal Doyle (Clonliffe Harriers) who made the Olympic semi-final in the Men’s 1500m two years ago.

European 1500m finalists Sarah Healy (UCD AC) and Sophie O’Sullivan (Ballymore Cobh AC) are selected to race in the Women’s Mile. Healy was fifth in Birmingham, with O’Sullivan just behind her in eighth. At last weekend’s Silesia Diamond League meeting in Poland, Healy clocked a 1500m season’s best of 3:57.42.

Brian Fay (Raheny Shamrock AC) and Darragh McElhinney (Bantry AC) will both be back in the green singlet in the Men’s 5km following their recent outings in Birmingham over 5000m.

Irish marathon record holder Peter Lynch (Kilkenny City Harriers) is one of a trio of Irish athletes who will race in the Men’s Half Marathon. Lynch broke the national record with a 2:06:08 clocking to finish inside the top ten at the London Marathon back in April. Joining him in the race will be Hiko Tonosa (Dundrum South Dublin AC) who was 60^th in this race in Riga three years ago and Barry Keane (Waterford AC).

The Mile and 5km events take place on Saturday with the Half Marathon medals down for decision on the Sunday.

Commenting on the selection Athletics Ireland’s High Performance Endurance Lead Mark Kenneally said:

“We are encouraged to be sending a strong team to World Athletics Road Running Championships this year. The fact that some of our strongest performers at the European Athletics Championships have chosen to compete demonstrates the value of this event. In addition, our Men’s Half Marathon team includes two athletes that have held the national record in recent years. We travel to the championships with high hopes of being competitive across events.”
